Partners in Shelter Services Presents:
Pit Ed Camp
We offer a busy, six day breed intensive designed to help animal care workers gain practical, hands-on experience with pit bulls and a deeper understanding of breed traits.
Daily Workshops are held in BAD RAP's Ambassadog Program (within the Oakland Animal Services) and in municipal shelters around the San Francisco bay area. Participants assess, test and train a variety of dogs under the guidance of BAD RAP founders. We cover:
•
Temperament and Behavior Assessments within a public shelter setting
•
Understanding common breed traits
•
Dog Tolerance Levels and Socializing: Reading body language and monitoring play styles
•
When is it a Pit Bull; When is it something else?
•
Working with Drive: Important rile/recovery work
•
Ways to reduce kennel stress and keep long-termers sane
•
Training exercises, tips and tools for working with energetic dogs
•
The Ins and Outs of creating an Ambassador Program in your shelter
•
Getting started: Attracting volunteer support and responsible homes, avoiding liability, educating adopters for long term success
•
Pit Ed Class! Camp attendees will join BAD RAP!s award winning class and take sheltered dogs through the program
Camp is Convenient to the Oakland International Airport and affordable lodging. Fee: $500 per participant for six days of workshops and materials. Scholarships are available to qualified applicants for all or part of camp.
"....the assessments of unknown pit bulls and evaluating pit bulls for ambassador programs was my favorite part of the entire week. I love to learn by doing and getting in on the action, so the physical handling, with your expert guidance, was deeply valuable. Having said that, the presentations on breed norms and pit mixes were integral in understanding what to look for in pit bulls that one is assessing and evaluating. To me, these presentations go hand in hand. I also have to mention how much I enjoyed the Shots Fair. Humane education is a passion of mine, and being able to see you guys in the act and help out in whatever ways I could was a real pleasure."
